Koetsu Jade Platinum Moving Coil Phono Cartridge - MINI REVIEW*

The Koetsu Jade Platinum moving coil phono cartridge has always been a dream component for me. For many years, I would look at ads that offered the cartridge and pay particular attention to newsgroup threads that mentioned it. I have owned all of the non-platinum Koetsu cartridges, from the Black to Urushi Tsugaru (see Reviews here on 10 Audio).

Koetsu Moving Coil Cartridges

The name Koetsu has long been held in high regard by audiophiles. Almost mystical attributes have been associated with the name. The buzz surrounding the release of the original Red signaled a new paradigm was available to the audio world.

Koetsu Rosewood Signature Platinum Moving Coil Cartridge

From the Urushi review:
"...with the Urushi, the feeling of arriving at a plateau of satisfaction is clear."

Krell Phantom III Preamplifier

The Krell Phantom III Preamplifier is a solid state, solidly built remote controlled preamplifier that carries a list price of $5,500. It has a zero-feedback dual-mono design and is available in anodized silver or black with an optional digital-to-analog converter (DAC) plug in board. The unit under review here does not have the DAC option.

Krell S-275 Stereo Power Amplifier

The Krell S-275 solid-state stereo power amplifier is one of the newest products from long-established Krell Industries. Krell gained recognition about 30 years ago for its pure Class A power amplifiers. At the time, the heavy weight and tremendous heat output of its Class A products went against the popular fashion of efficient solid-state circuits.

Magico S1 Mk II Loudspeakers

The floor standing, 2-way Magico S1 Mk II speakers are exceptional. Before we get into the specifics of this particular model, let’s take a minute or two and let me share with you why I am a fan of 2-way speakers.

Marantz MA-9S2 Reference Series Power Amplifiers

It is the holiday season and I am going to give you a present. This is the culmination of a long and winding and interesting and frustrating and expensive journey from that first audio component to hearing one that had me saying, “That’s the one!” It is the story of developing specific ideas about good sound reproduction, validating or replacing those concepts, and finding that some of these tenets no longer applied.

Marantz SA-10 CD/SACD Player & DAC

Just like Rodney Dangerfield, the Marantz SA-10 CD/SACD Player and DAC gets no respect. This is a shame as the SA-10 could well be the best sounding, best built player/DAC anywhere close to its $6990 list price. At the top of the Marantz line of digital products, the SA-10 could easily maintain that preeminent position for years to come.

Marantz SA-7S1 and Cary 306 Professional CD/SACD Players

I had just about given up on CDs. There were some recent changes to my digital playback system and CDs were sounding better than they ever had in my system. Even so, vinyl LP playback still made CDs seem like second class citizens. Sure they have a place in the audio landscape, but for enjoying music to the fullest, those old long-playing records provided far more accomplished and enjoyable listening experiences.

Mark Levinson No. 326S Preamplifier with Phono

The Mark Levinson No326S (326S) solid state stereo preamplifier arrived. After removing 37 staples from the outer box, and opening inner box number one, I found the preamplifier inside a third box. While many audio components are packed to survive a short drop from the back of a delivery truck, it is conceivable that this preamp could be delivered by the U.S. Army into a combat zone without damage.
