Spendor S5e Loudspeakers

Small and lightweight and good looking. These are the first impressions I had when unpacking and setting up the 2 ½ way Spendors. They were smaller in person than I expected them to be, measuring just 31.1 x 6.5 x 10.4 inches. If you recall the big Dunlavys and Duntechs, you are familiar with the tall-and-narrow format, although tall in this case is just thigh high. The S5e model weighs in at about 35 pounds.

Spread Spectrum Technologies Ampzilla 2000 Power Amplifier

Passion. Our hobby/interest/vocation is all about passion. There is a lot of passion in the high-end audio universe and James Bongiorno, the head of Spread Spectrum Technologies, has a consuming passion for his creations. He has been building and refining the Ampzilla amplifier concept since 1974 and holds a patent on the design. From his Web site:

Spread Spectrum Technologies Ampzilla 2000 Second Edition Power Amplifiers

When I reviewed the original Ampzilla 2000 monoblock power amplifers in February, 2009, I reported on a very good sounding, well made component that had just enough of its own character that it was highly recommended but not without reservations.

Sutherland 20/20 and DUO Phono Preamplifiers

Sutherland DUO

The Sutherland 20/20 dual mono moving-coil/moving magnet phono cartridge preamplifier was introduced in 2010 and carries a list price of $2,199. The 20/20 differs from previous Sutherland phono preamps by being powered by the AC line, not by batteries. The design is what Ron Sutherland calls “Two Mono”. There are two entirely separate sections in the single enclosure separated by air, one section for each channel.

Two Power Cables - Element Stealth "es" & PS Audio PerfectWave AC-10

Writing about power cords is like drinking air when you are hungry. You can spend a lot of time doing it, but in the end, your efforts will have little effect on your appetite. The reason for my ambivalent outlook on this subject is not that I find aftermarket power cords to be worthless. On the contrary. I find that power cords can have a huge and important and necessary effect on the sound of audio components.

Valvet E2 SE Stereo Power Amplifier

The new Valvet E2 SE single-ended Class A solid-state amplifier is a revelation. Coming to market about a year after my review of the Valvet E2, the SE version exceeds the E2's audible performance in every parameter. Please see the older review for context. The special edition SE version takes all the E2's excellent performance and offers improvements in every area.
